HOLSTEBRO
FESTUGE VIII
4 - 12 June 2011
Love Stories
Without Eros nothing is right - the ancient Greeks knew it.
The God Eros - the God of love - is also in control of the elements
on which life is founded: friendship, tenderness, solidarity and
passion.
Meet him, meet Eros and much more in the 8th
Holstebro Festive Week: Love
Stories!

Holstebro Festuge (Festive Week)
It is a great pleasure - and with great festive week
love - once again to welcome you to Holstebro Festuge.
It all began in 1989, when Odin Teatret wished to celebrate its
25th birthday by inviting the citizens of Holstebro for some
theatre experiences beyond what they would normally be invited to
by the theatre. And then the theatre got the idea, that perhaps
other institutions of Holstebreo would like to do the same, so that
many varied activities could take place in the same period and be
presented for the citizens of Holstebro, like a grand bouquet:
Holstebro Festuge. The idea was received well by the other
institutions of the town.
It should also be mentioned, that Odin Teatret had not
considered the possibility of the Festuge becoming a recurring
event. Many people who had participated in the first Festuge talked
about this exciting initiative and kept asking when the next
festuge would take place. It was not until then that Odin Teatret
decided to initiate festuge number two. After that followed number
three - and four and so on.
What makes Holstebro Festuge unique, is that over the years
particular theatre events have been developed, when a great number
of local people, institutions and organisations actively
participate and collaborate with the professional artists. These
activities are extensive and often out door theatre events, which
are staged by Odin Teatret and their international guest
artists.

The Invisible Town
This year's grand and spectacular theatre event will be the
multi-performance The Invisible Town, which the
Italian theatre group, Teatro Potlach, stage together with many
groups, institutions and individual local people from Holstebro.
The Invisible Town can be discovered between the
9th - 11th June in every corner of the
Beredskabsgården and Odin Teatret in Særkærparken. Odin Teatret and
the invited theatre companies Teatro Potlach, Teatro tascabile di
Bergamo and Pontedera Teatro - all from Italy - and the
international group Jasonites along with Clairobasper - the chess
club, local musicians, the OrkesterEfterskole, the Ballet School,
the Music School, the belly dancers, the kajak club, the knitting
club and many more participants - a total of approximately 150
performers. The Invisible town is a multimedia
performance, where various stages, musical pieces, installations,
choreographic sequences, reconstructions, lights and scenographical
interventions reveal a hidden and secret town behind the Holstebro
we all know. It is the soul and sub consciousness of Holstebro,
which will appear before us.
You can look forward to a week full of surprising, comical,
unthinkable, loving, imaginative performances, events and
interventions with songs, dramatic episodes, music, readings - all
of it coloured by the Festuge theme: Love
Stories.
Enjoy!
Teatro Potlach (Fara Sabina, Italy)
Teatro Potlach is a 35 year old Italian theatre group, founded
by Pino di Buduo, leader and artistic director. Teatro Potlach has
worked with all genres of theatre and perform both in and out door
performances around the world with great success. Teatro Polach is
bringing many different performances from its extensive
repertoire: Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, The
Tales of Fernando, The Orchestra Directors as well as
street parades and some smaller, scenic episodes and not least the
multi-performance The Invisible Town. All of the
performances are suitable for both children and adults. Further
information under the individual performances in the programme
below.
Festuge News
During the Festuge a small, professional film crew will follow
events throughout the municipalilty. At the end of the day, these
documentations will be presented on the Storskærm (the big screen)
placed on the outside wall of Musikteatret. Aesopstudio film
company from Italy will be organising this.

Teatro tascabile di Bergamo (Bergamo,
Italy)
This Italian group, known world wide for their poetic street
performances, has participated in many previous Holstebro Festuge
events to great amusement for both tourists and locals. This time
they are bringing with them the impressively beautiful out door
performances Valse, Albatri and
Tales from the Pear Garden, the clown performance
My Lord! aswell as many others. The performances
will be presented in schools, in the town centre and around the
municipality.
PoesiKaravanen (The Poetry Procession)
A procession with one of the most famous Maroccan poets,
Abdallah Zrika, his wife Touria Hadraoui, who herself is a well
known author and famous singer in the maroccan malhun-tradition,
the Danish poet Thomas Boberg, the French-Italian percussionist
Francesco Agnello, the Danish-German musical couple Uta Motz and
Anders Allentoft, Iben Nagel Rasmussen, bringing poems by her
father, Halfdan Rasmussen, and Ulrik Skeel - and at times with
surprise visitors. The PoesiKaravanen will travel around in the
municipality and with one brief visit to Lemvig - to entertain with
poetry readings, music and singing in intimate and open spaces -
known as well as unknown.
Down by the River Saloon
Frans Winther has written both music and manuscript as well as
directed this performance with amonghts others a great number of
talented young people from Dansk Talentakademi (Danish Talent
Academy) in Holstebro. The performance will be presented three
times, from the 3 June on the large stage of the Musikteatret. The
theme is very current. In fact the River Saloon is an existing bar
in Holstebro - and very popular amongst the youth of Holstebro.
Hayley Ketteringham-Coton from England and Augusto Omolú from
Brazil are responsible for the choreography, which is based on
street dance, hip hop and candomblé dance. Scenography and costumes
by Jan de Neergaard. Production by Per Bech Jensen.

The Jasonites
This international group was created during the last Holstebro
Festuge (in 2008) in connection with the staging of Medeas
Wedding, a performance directed by Eugenio Barba. The group
has specialized in theatrical events with music, song, dance and
clown episodes, which gives them the ability to perform in many
different connections at schools, care homes and at bigger events
attended by many people from different backgrounds. They will
amongst other things perform the very comical
Shakespills, which will keep you busy laughing.
The Jasonites have visited Holstebro many times since the last
Festuge and have become quite popular with many locals because of
their bubbly and infectious humor.
Ageless and Dance of
Love
With Love Stories in mind, Odin Teatret has
organised two workshops in the weeks leading up to the Festuge for
a larger number of international participants. Under the direction
of Julia Varley, Tage Larsen, Augusto Omolú from Odin Teatret and
Deborah Hunt from Maskhunt Motions, Puerto Rico, and with the
assistance of the director Anna Stigsgaard the two teams of
workshop participants will shape two particularly spectacular
groups, which will contribute to the Festuge with various
theatrical interventions and activities.
The Global Village
Kai Bredholt from Odin Teatret is directing The Global
Village in the middle of the Holstebro Church square.
Twice a day a row of exciting events will take place there. Both in
the morning and in the afternoon the square will be visited by the
visiting Festuge artists. In the afternoon to exchange songs and
dances with the villagers. In the afternoon to participate in the
performance The Love Story of our Lives, when also
sheep, walking frames, a horse, tower climbers, a Danish
banjo-player, a Tamil violinist, pensioners and karate fighters
will participate. The performance will always close with a fun
party polonaise for all. Organised by Odin Teatret in collaboration
with Holstebro Church, the flamenco association A Compas
and Skibet på Kanten.

Pontedera Teatro (Pontedera, Italy)
Loving Lisboa is a a street
performance by Pontedera Teatro: a declaration of love to the great
Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa and his beloved native city Lisbon.
Accompanied by music and songs from Portugal - from the danceable
viras to the melancholic
fado - 11 figures on bicycles, all
dressed in black, conjure up the atmosphere of the beautiful
capital.
The performance brings to life the imaginary poets that Pessoa
invented and who signed his works. They accompany Pessoa through
the town on their bicycles, falling, taking off to the skies or
dancing tango with their bicycles on their way back towards a
Lisbon, which may only exists in the works of Pessoa.
The Place of the Heart
An itinerant performance with Ageless Love international group,
Pontedera Teatro on bicycles, I Wayan Bawa from Bali, Deborah Hunt
from Puerto Rico, Odin Teatret and local storytellers and
associations. The performance visits parks, houses, streets,
churches, schools in Holstebro that have a special love story to
tell. Following a different route each time, the love story will be
revealed through words, songs, music, masks and images. The
spectators contribute to the procession and ceremony, letting the
love story emerge from the past by dressing themselves for the
occasion as if coming to a wedding and by adorning their means of
transport: their cars (5 June), bicycles (6 June) or feet (7-8
June). Please note the meeting place for the beginning of the
performance in the general programme below.

Love Declarations
Ageless Love and Dance of Love international groups, Pontedera
Teatro on bicycles, I Wayan Bawa from Bali, Cleber Paixão from
Brazil, Deborah Hunt from Puerto Rico and Odin Teatret visit
institutions, associations, schools, squares, hospitals,
post-offices, libraries, old people's homes, police stations,
museums, and bakeries in Holstebro and the region, to perform a
love declaration to a book, a cake, a statue, the sun and moon, to
recreation, to wrinkles, to an eye, a postman, an ex-mayor, a
new-born baby…
Rendezvous
Ageless Love and Dance of Love international groups, Pontedera
Teatro on bicycles, I Wayan Bawa from Bali, Cleber Paixão from
Brazil, Deborah Hunt from Puerto Rico and Odin Teatret invade a
village for a barter of love stories told by the foreign performers
and the local inhabitants. Two different beings meet not knowing
what the outcome will be. The excitement of the meeting is at the
centre of attention.
A Serenade to Holstebro
The traditional Festuge Saturday morning parade will involve all
the Festuge invited performers, some animals, a bicycle, and the
Ageless Festuge mask couple to sing serenades in languages from all
over the world from the streets to the windows and balconies along
the walking street and central squares of Holstebro.
Various
From Monday to Friday the Mariachi Orchestra Las 3
Palomas will travel round in Holstebro together with
locals in love and to sing love serenades to the chosen person for
instance at work. The chosen person can be the lady at the cash
register in the super market, Louise at the Primary School or the
secretary at the accountants office, a fireman at the local fire
station etc. The only rule which applies, is that the person in
love must be present with the orchestra.
Clairobasper is a group of loving souls dressed
in white, who during the Festuge will turn up in the most
unexpected places, doing the most wonderful things. Directed by
Donald Kitt.
Dance of Love will in addition to what is
already in the programme, appear in many other places around the
municipality, where people can gather and in ten minutes be told
everything there is to know about the ways of true love.
Holstebro Tangofestival 2011
The launching of a new cultural event in Holstebro - an annual
festival, when you amongst other things can learn to dance an
Argentinian tango, something which has become quite popular in the
more recent years. From the beginning of the Festuge, there will be
tango performances and enjoyable tango episodes throughout the
week,
culminating on Saturday 11 June at Hotel Schaumburg when there
will be tango tutoring, dancing, show and concert by one of the
best tango orchestras in Europe, Tipica Tangarte.

Sunday
22 May:
The actress Iben Nagel Rasmussen evokes Odin
Teatret's performances from 1966 until the present day. She
illustrates the changes her voice has undergone, from the closed
room (which allows the actors to reveal their inner world) and the
street performances (the meeting with the exterior world) to the
space which words create through their meanings and sounds.
Monday
23 May:
Doña Musica's Butterflies is a performance about identity which
the protagonist defines as a tendency to exist. It is the story of
a character who has escaped from a performance - Kaosmos - and
tells of her origins and adventures in terms of entomology, through
theories of modern physics and with poems and tales from other
times. With
Julia Varley.
Tuesday 24 May:
The Echo of Silence is a work demonstration during
which the vicissitudes of the voice of an actor and the strategems
she invents to "interpret" a text are described.
The voice of the actor and the text presented to the spectators
compose the music of a performance. In theatre, which seems to be
free of the codes we find in music, the actor needs to create a
labyrinth of rules, references and resistance to follow or refuse
so as to achieve a personal expression and recognise his/her
own voice. With Julia Varley.
Wednesday 25 May:
Reading Shakespeare's "Othello", the performer, an elegantly
dressed black man, gets carried away by the story.
The perfo rmer enacts the main characters - Othello, Desdemona,
Iago, according to the words which are sung in Verdi's "Otello".
The performer changes from one character to another, building
dialogues between them, but also reacting to the characters he
interprets.
Verdi's opera music is commented on, backed up or counter
pointed by the traditional rhythm of the Candomblé drums.
The performance is based exclusively on the codification of the
Orixá dances: all gestures, steps and movements originate from the
dances of the saints and gods of the Candomblé religion. Orô is a
word used to indicate a ceremony.
In the performance the Orixás are different manifestations of
the human passions which animate the main episodes of the play.
The dramatic events evoked by Othello's story slowly drive the
performer into a xiré. During the xiré in a
Candomblé ceremony the drums greet and call the different Orixás so
that they can descend and ride the devotee who is dancing.
The performance finishes with an avania, the final dance
and salutation rhythm as all the Orixás leave. With Augusto
Omolú.
Thursday 26 May:
Using an excerpt from Shakespeare's Othello Tage
Larsen and Julia Varley work on a dialogue between Othello and Iago
in front of the public presenting a process based on the creation
and elaboration of physical and vocal actions. The capacity of
creating physical and vocal scores is the result of years of
training and productions with Odin Teatret. Shakespeare's text is
said in English, while the explanations are in the language of the
spectators. Photocopies of the excerpt can be provided in English,
French, Italian and Spanish.
The impulse for this demonstration came from Tage's passion for
Shakespeare and the need to find working techniques that bridge the
physical vocabulary of Odin Teatret with written text.
The two actors, through improvisation and composition, develop a
dynamic physical score that becomes the foundation for their
encounter when they incorporate the text. They weed and meld the
physical material so that the score of actions does not interfere
with the sense of the scene itself, but contributes to the reading,
poetry and flow of the text. With Julia Varley and Tage
Larsen.
Friday
27 May:
The title of his performance is from the written work of the
revolutionary Italian scientist Galileo Gililei describing his
binocular observations (for the first time in history), which led
to the realisation that the earth is not the centre of the
universe.
A man living by himself in an isolated place with few possessions,
brings to life the universe: his and ours. Unravelling and
uncovering a world which is out of hand. He knows too much. Now a
fugitive, he pays the price of his active involvement. He is lost,
he can not get back, he is stranded. With Donald
Kitt.
The starry messenger is directed by Tage Larsen, Odin Teatret actor.
Søndag
den 29. maj:
6.00 p.m.: Quasi Orpheus: the
actor-musician
Quasi Orpheus is a work demonstration in which Jan Ferslev
uses examples from training and performances to explain how
movement, music, voice and musical instruments are integrated in
his work. He shows how a musical instrument can become an extension
of the body, thus enhancing its possibilities; how action, voice
and sonority merge to suggest different associations and moods; how
the visual aspect of an instrument is integrated in the creative
process; and finally how all these elements are united in a
complex synthesis of expression, which belongs to the performer's
personality and turns into the backbone of the performance. With Jan
Ferslev.
"Text is a carpet that has to fly far away." With this sentence
as a starting point the demonstration works its way through the
past thirty years of the Odin Teatret performances in which Julia
Varley has taken part. Few essential explanations accompany the
vocal work that exemplifies the passage of the word from the
written form to space, from coldness of paper to the freedom of
interpretation. With Julia Varley.
Monday
30 May:
The Dead Brother is an explanation of how performances
are created at Odin Teatret. It describes the stages in the work,
starting out from a poetic text which becomes a "poem in space":
the performance.
It presents the different phases of the process in which text,
actor and director interact. It shows how the actor creates his/her
own stage presence until the final synthesis in which the text,
through the form and precision of the actions, acquires a rhythm
and density of meaning. With Julia Varley.
"I am now in my sixties and I feel it is time for me to look
back in time. Creativity is like a continuos act of giving birth
and all the figures that I have given life to in the theatre, are
my stage children, that I would like to encounter and to revive
once more."
Else
Marie Laukvik speaks about her life as an actress, and at the
same time illustrating it with film fragments from the
performances: Ornitofilene, Kaspariana,
Ferai, My Father's House, Come! And
the Day will be ours, Book of
Dances, Anabasis, The
Million, The Gospel According to Oxyrhincus
and Memoria.
Tuesday 31 May:
Every performance tells a story. The characters belonging to the
world of fiction become credible reality for the spectator thanks
to the actor's technique.
In Traces in the Snow the technique itself becomes
the protagonist. The actress carries on a dialogue with the secrets
which precede and follow the building of a character and the
creation of a performance. With Roberta Carreri.
Wednesday 1 June:
1 - 12 June:
Art Exhibition

Githuka and Patrick Mukabi. Organised by Holstebro Church.

12.30 p.m.: Twenty Thousand Leagues under the
Sea
Based on the fascinating Jules Vernes story about captain Nemo
and his travels under the sea in his famous submarine, Nautilus,
Teatro Potlach has created a fabulous theatre performance for the
whole family. By the use of the most recent techniques in light
design, film and computer techniques, the spectator is virtually
placed in the mystical universe of the sea. Performance language:
English. Free entrance!
Place: VIA University College
Holstebro.
6.00 p.m.: The Complete Actor
Actor and dancer from Bali, I Wayan Bawa, demonstrate song-,
dance- and theatre techniques of the theatre tradition from his
native country, which is both alive and relevant.
In a comfortable but unfamiliar room in a residential care home,
mother and daughter sit and talk. With a stubbornness bordering on
the tragicomic, the same words and terms are constantly repeated.
The dialogue reawakens past experiences, unrealised dreams and
plans for the future, which only exists in a world of fantasy.
Physical activity is minimal but a diary from the end of the
Second World War, a photo album and private film clips from half a
century ago reveal different layers of Ester's life. Music and
songs from a distant youth accompany pictures and texts, bringing
closer historical changes which shook and marked her
generation.
The story of my mother is also a reflection on becoming old in
present day Denmark, about loneliness and separation.
Nobody is born old. It has been my wish to give voice to some of
the fragments of my mother's life which would otherwise have been
buried with her. With Iben Nagel Rasmussen and Uta
Motz.
Place: Odin Teatret
Thursday 2 June:
11.30 a.m.: Actors from Teatro Potlach visit the
walking streets with the programme for the day.
2.00 p.m.: As above.
Mr Peanut, Odin Teatret's archetypal character with a skull
head, is presented in three inkarnations: the wayfarer in black,
the housewife in red and the bride in white. Time passes with the
speed of a string unravelling and the child that played in the
morning is no longer recognisable in the evening. With Julia
Varley.
A white deck chair, a large fan, a bonsai, combs of
mother-of-pearl, a decapitated head carved out of wood, long hat
pins to pierce its eyes and tongue and for adorning the hair, a red
dressing gown, a white silk nightdress. Through the justification
of the biblical story of Judith, the performance explores the theme
of violence and vulnerability, plunging into an ocean of luminous
and murderous eroticism. With Roberta Carreri.
