L'arbre de l'Histoire grandit robuste et mort.

 

Autour de lui, enfants soldats et moines en prière dansent avec les seigneurs de la guerre, une mère en colère et la fille d'un poète qui, enfant, rêvait de s'envoler avec son père.

 

Deux conteuses présentent et commentent scènes et personnages. Dans le désert syrien deux moines yézidis plantent un poirier pour rappeler les oiseaux qui ont disparu. Au Nigeria, une femme se repose à l'ombre de l'arbre de l'oubli tenant dans ses bras la tête de sa fille cachée dans une calebasse. Un seigneur de la guerre européen explique la nécessité de la purification ethnique à un seigneur de la guerre africain qui accomplit un sacrifice humain pour rendre invulnérable son armée d'enfants soldats avant de les emmener au combat. Une enfant joue avec ses poupées près de l'arbre que son père a planté quand elle est née.

 

Elle se demande comment les oiseaux voient la terre depuis le ciel.

 

A la fin, l'arbre de l'Histoire ploie sous le poids des fruits et offre une maison aux oiseaux qui volent au-dessus de la tête des spectateurs.

 

Mais quel genre d'oiseaux ?

The Tree

The tree of History grows vigorously and dead. Around it, child-soldiers and praying monks dance together with warlords, a wrathful mother, and the daughter of a poet who, as a child, dreamed of flying away with her father.

 

Two story-tellers introduce and comment upon characters and events: in the Syrian desert two Yazidi monks plant a pear tree to call back the birds that have disappeared; in Nigeria a mother rests under the shadow of the tree of forgetfulness holding in her arms the head of her daughter hidden in a gourd; a European warlord explains the necessity for ethnic cleansing to an African warlord who performs a human sacrifice to make his army of child soldiers invulnerable before leading them into battle; a girl plays with her dolls around the tree her father planted when she was born, wondering how birds see the earth from the air.

 

The tree of History finally bends under the weight of fruit and offers a home to the birds that are flying over the heads of the spectators. But what kind of birds are they?
